Microsuction is a technique widely used by professional ear wax removal clinics. When the procedure is carried out by trained professionals, it is an easy, safe, and quick way of removing excess ear wax. Both ears can be done within 30 minutes in most cases.

How to know if you need ear wax removal?

Symptoms of earwax build-up include:

• hearing loss
• earache or a feeling that your ears are blocked
• ringing or buzzing in your ears (tinnitus)
• vertigo (feeling dizzy and sick) 

What is microsuction?

Microsuction is the removal of wax, infection, debris and foreign bodies within your ears. The practitioner looks at your ear through a microscope, and will then use a small suction tube and fine suction end to remove the wax. This can be noisy due to the suction machine however, it should not be painful. If it is uncomfortable, let the practitioner know and they will stop the procedure. You will be asked to keep still as possible unless asked to move. This is important as movement can cause accidental injury to the ear canal or eardrum if unexpected.  

Causes of earwax build-up

A build-up of earwax can happen if:

• you have narrow or damaged ear canals
• you have lots of hair in your ear canals
• you have a skin condition affecting your scalp or around your ear
• you have inflammation of your ear canal (otitis externa or "swimmer’s ear")
